Roadmaps of Qualcomm’s Next-Gen Snapdragon Chips Leaked

Qualcomm has been powering several smartphones and not-so-smart phones with their Snapdragon SoC (system on chip) and they’re quite well known about it. The latest news doing the rounds is that their roadmap for 2012/2013 has been leaked and the future chips will support HSPA+ and LTE connectivity support.
Processors to be launched in
Processors to be launched in "Kraits"

According to sources, in the fourth quarter of 2011, Qualcomm is scheduled to release the MSM8960 dual-core processors that will clock somewhere between 1.5-1.7 GHz codenamed Krait. These chips will also feature an Adreno 225 GPU which supports DirectX 9.3.

Sometime around the third quarter of 2012, there’s a likelihood that the company will be manufacturing lower-end processors (hopefully it means cheaper mid-range smartphones) with the MSM8930 dual-core CPU clocking 1.0-1.2 GHz. Surprisingly the GPU it supports is the Adreno 305 which despite the name is actually slower than the Adreno 225.

Finally, in Q1 of 2013, Qualcomm will be launching MSM8974 quad-core processors clocking 2.0-2.5 GHz with support for 1080p video at 60fps and an Adreno 320 GPU.

So we can see a whole new generation of smart(er)phones wielding quad-core chips and better features.

Amazon Launches Unlimited Cloud Music Storage Today

Popular cloud based storage service provider, Amazon has today announced the launch of an unlimited music storage option, in addition to a Cloud Player for iPad. Amazon believes that making music storage unlimited would enhance its existing Cloud Player and Cloud Drive services.
Unlimited Music..
Unlimited Music..

Beginning from today, CNET reports that for a while at least, on making a purchase of $20 annual Cloud Drive storage plan will get unlimited storage space on their MP3 and AAC (M4A) music files. Existing users would remember that although Amazon did boast of these same features, before too, but at that time they began with 5GB of storage, which could then be upgraded to 20GB. And, currently, the unlimited storage option can be availed only for music, whereas users can still download other content with limited storage place.

Additionally, Amazon has rendered the purchase of MP3 free in the Cloud Drive. Interestingly, as mentioned earlier, Amazon has also launched Cloud Player on the web, especially for iPad users.

Plextor PX-256M2S 256GB SSD

Solid State Drives were said to get popular and it appears, that’s happening. A majority of people though are still clueless as to what an SSD is. There are those who think of them as external drives or larger capacity flash drives. In India, SSDs are not mainstream or as well known as hard disk drives. We don't blame them for not being aware as SSDs are a fairly recent form of storage as compared to hard disk drives.

SSDs use memory chips instead of a moving platter like the ones found in HDDs, thus they are less susceptible to shocks, are virtually silent, and have lower access time and latency. In addition to this, solid state drives are normally found in a 2.5-inch form factor and are extremely light weight and can also fit into your notebook.

Plextor is a company we haven’t heard about in a while. They were last known for their optical drives, but have dipped in the SSD market and launched a 2.5-inch SSD in three different capacities. We have the largest capacity model, the Plextor PX-256M2S 256 GB SSD for review.

Design and Features
Internal drives are rarely good to look at, but we were surprised by the design of the PX-256M2S, with its stylish brushed metal exterior. The Plextor PX-256M2S 256GB falls under the M2 Series of SSDs, as the latter half of the model number suggests. You can also find 128GB and 64GB models in this series. The drive features a SATA 6 GB/s interface. With hard drives, there’s little worry of SATA2 being a bottleneck, but with an SSD, there’s a good chance that the drive could be faster. Having SATA3 support is a good thing in this case.

Furthermore, the drive features a Marvell 88SS9174 controller chip, and Plextor boasts of sequential read rates up to 480MB/s and sequential write rate up to 330MB/s with this drive. Read on to see if these real world test scores actually live up to the company’s claims.

The drive also features TRIM command which is basically a command that allows an operating system to inform an SSD which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally.

Test Rig Specifications
Processor: Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte P67A-UD3R
Memory: Corsair Dominator GT 4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2 GB)
Hard drive: WD Velociraptor  300 GB
GPU: Palit GTX560 Ti
PSU: Cooler Master 1000W

Performance
The Plextor PX-256M2S solid state drive was put through the regular tests undertaken in our labs, which included synthetic tests, as well as real world file transfer speed tests.

To start off, after running each test, the entire rig was completely shut down and restarted, so as to prevent any kind of caching. In addition to this, no application was running in the background and our system was isolated from the network. In the synthetic benchmark tests, we ran SiSoft Sandra and the average write speed recorded was 417 MB/s, which is expected from a high-performance SSD such as this. The random access time noted through the same synthetic test was 60ms.

Real world scores were recorded by running a file transfer test from our Western Digital Velociraptor 300GB to the Plextor SSD. We copied test data sets from the WD drive to the SSD and back. There was also a copy test between partitions in the Plextor SSD.

In this case, we noticed that the WD Velociraptor tends to be a bottleneck while transferring data, so we used a software to generate a data set and directly dump it on the SSD. The write speed noticed on to the Plextor 256GB SSD was 261MB/s for a single file transfer and the assorted file transfer recorded a speed of 334MB/s. The inter partition file transfer tests were done using a real world data transfer test. For the single 4GB, we recorded an average speed of 146MB/s, while the multiple file transfer test notched an average score of 132MB/s.

We tried writing data from the SSD back to the Velociraptor, and noticed a major drop in performance due to the bottleneck. Write tests from the drive were undertaken using the same real world file transfer test and the average speed for a single 4G file transfer seen was 109 MB/s. The multiple 4 GB file transfer came off a little worse with the average speed recorded was 81 MB/s.

Slim and light weight
Slim and light weight

Verdict
It’s clear that the Plextor PX-256M2S is an impressive performer. The read, write and copy tests were all way higher than any drive we’ve tested, so far. The inter-copy drive testifies that. Usually, even the fastest of hard drives crawl at 40 - 60 MB/s in inter-partition copy tests, but a score of 146 MB/s takes the SSD to a completely new level

An MRP of Rs. 27,500 makes it an extremely expensive storage solution. It’s definitely not value for money, even if you consider its scorching transfer rates. Anyone building an extreme high-end performance rig wanting the absolute best of performance and reasonable storage capacity should buy this. The only other way to get this kind of performance might be by using RAID on two or more very fast hard drives.

Microsoft Merges GFW Marketplace and Xbox.com

In a move that was probably anticipated months ago, Microsoft has decided to move its Games of Windows service to Xbox.com. This merger’s main aim is to make sure gamers get “all their gaming needs in one place”. For those who don’t know, Microsoft’s Games for Windows marketplace is similar to Valve’s Steam where gamers can digitally purchase entire games online.

Eurogamer managed to get in touch with a Microsoft spokesperson about this merger and here’s what they had to say, “All of the same content from GamesForWindows.com will be available on Xbox.com so members of communities across Xbox 360 and Games for Windows can purchase and get details on their favorite games, all in one place. All account information will remain the same and community members can still take advantage of their Xbox Live profile in their Windows games and stay connected to friends who are playing on the PC.”

Both these services are expected to come together by the 11th of this month.

End of the Line For MS Office XP

Microsoft’s Office suite has come a long way. One of its oldest, most used versions, Office XP will be discontinued on the 11th of July, 2011. In doing this, Microsoft will no longer offer patches and updates to the aging office suite. Just last week, Microsoft released a service pack for their Office 2010 office suite. Users of Office XP received five years of support and another five years of extended support. Office XP was released in May 2001 and it’s been more than a decade since its launch.

Microsoft has stated that the version of Office will continue to function, but future updates won’t be available, and so they do not recommended using it. Microsoft also has been in the news for their new Office 365 web suite that's direct competition to the Google Docs Office suite. It’ll be interesting to see how many users actually move from Google Docs and the entire Google suite to Microsoft’s alternative. Most users, including large organisations have moved from their traditional mail services to Google. Those on tighter budgets are using Oracle’s OpenOffice suite.

Ricoh to Enter DSLR Camera Market, Buys Pentax

Ricoh, the popular printing solutions brand is probably going to enter the DSLR market. Hoya, the popular glass specialist known for lenses, filters and also the ones who bought Pentax back in 2007, are now selling it off to Ricoh. According to Reuters, Hoya is said to be receiving $124.2 million for the Pentax brand. Ricoh already has a compact camera business and hopes to get into the DSLR market after this purchase. The cameras will continue to be sold under the Pentax brand name, and not Ricoh. The deal is said to be completed by October, this year.

Pentax hasn’t been doing too well and they reported a 13 per cent  drop in sales in March this year in the camera segment. The mainstream DSLR market has been dominated by Nikon and Canon. There’s also news that Ricoh is planning to lose 10 per cent of their manpower to boost profits. Hoya saw a rise in the share market following the news of Pentax being sold off. Ricoh, on the other hand, saw a drop of 0.2 per cent.

Want Google+ to Look More Like Facebook?

Since Google+ resembles Facebook in look and feel, here's a plugin that will help complete the journey for you. A theme by Fabio Giolito, using CSS, turns Google+ into a doppelganger for Facebook. The theme can be installed as a userstyle user script or as an add-on for Chrome/Firefox plugin, Stylish. Internet Explorer and Opera users who install the script will find that their Google+ will have Facebook's exact colour scheme and layout.

Giolito has put the userstyle on Github. Check out the pictures and let us know if you would use the plugin to make your Google+ look more like Facebook. In other Google+ news, it seems Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has a Google+ page. He's joined the site that's trying to take down his site and his profile picture resonates his unhappiness about that. He hasn't imported any of his Facebook data into Google+ and the only information that's up there about him is that he's a male from Palo Alto. His intro reads, "I make things".

Windows Gets Another App Store

Yesterday, we announced the arrival of Pokki, an app store for the PC. Today, yet another one has arrived and this one's called "Avenue". While Pokki puts mobile-like Applets on the PC, Avenue is an avenue for fully functional Windows apps. The Avenue App store comes from a company called Netvolution, and provides a way for Windows users to browse and download Windows compatible desktop applications. Users can browse applications by popularity or by category and as well as by new and featured apps. Categories include games, communication, reference tools, utility, entertainment and multimedia.

Commenting on the safety of Avenue, Netvolution CEO, Matt Smith says, "While there are plenty of websites that allow Windows PC users to download software, most target only a specific niche user or are filled with unscreened and unlicensed software. Avenue is the first centralized marketplace for all kinds of Windows PC software that’s safe and on par with the app stores that exist for Mac and mobile users."

To shop in Avenue, you can either add apps to your wishlist or to your shopping cart. Your user account works across computers, so if you log in from another computer, downloads that were in progress on say, your home machine, will continue on the new computer. Right now, apps are a little sparse, but as the popularity of apps for the Windows desktop grows, both Avenue and Pokki, as well as the others that come up, will have greater variety in the apps they carry.

Pokki is an App Store for the PC

In the race of the apps, the PC almost seems to have been neglected. While it has mostly been mobile devices and tablets, Apple still made a Mac App Store for Apple desktops, but Windows desktops seemed left behind. Pokki, is an App Store for Windows based desktops. The design of it is very Mac-esque. Right now, it's PC only, but a Mac version of the store will be out later, this year. The company behind this app store is a San Diego based startup, SweetLabs. SweetLabs co-founder, Chester Ng says, "What we saw as developers and users were these fantastic app experiences on mobile and tablets that make it easy for consumers to discover and install apps in one-click, and easy for developers to distribute their apps. But, ironically billions of consumers spend a majority of their waking hours on the desktop, and the desktop experience is prehistoric."

PC users need to install Pokki once to access 'Pokkis', which are web connected desktop apps available from the Pokki store. Installed Pokkis and the Pokki store sit together in the menu bar on the desktop. Pokki apps are built in HTML5, CSS and Javascript. SweetLabs has added its own Pokkis to the store, which include Pokkis for Gmail, Facebook, the Wall Street Journal, eBay, Living Social and more. There aren't too many applications at launch, however, the store right now is aimed at developers to start developing for the PC.

Groupon's SoSasta.com Suffers a Data Breach

SoSasta.com, a fairly popular discount shopping website in India suffered a data breach, over the weekend. The users of the service were immediately notified by the site via email about the breach, and were asked to immediately change their passwords. SoSasta.com doesn’t store the credit card, debit card or net banking details of its customers on its database, owing to the legal regulations of the firm, thus sparing the users the anxiety caused by having their sensitive data stolen. The data base, in question, however, includes the e-mail addresses and passwords of over 300,000 users of the website.

The breach came to light when the Australian security consultant, Daniel Grzelak, from Risky.biz found the data belonging to SoSasta.com users on Google. He then called up Groupon, and informed the owner company about the data breach that had taken place. The site currently operates across 11 Indian cities, including - Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Delhi/NCR, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Nagpur, Mumbai, Chennai and Bengaluru.
